For this you will need, rice, rubbing alcohol, food coloring and a large container. To color the rice put about 1 cup of rice in a ziploc bag. Add in 3 Tbsp. of alcohol and lots of drops of color. Seal the bag and squeeze to mix it all together. Then lay out your rice on a cooking sheet to dry. We actually put each color in the microwave for one minute and then laid it out to dry. It dried completely in about 45 minutes. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-7kxMcmDayYaqvyhw67rAAgU2J03wYxRUdvOYA0c_K0voVcDE5Q5TS4nrlMR4yb56E_pHAcXOWRAjE9h9BgQNybaRI4SB4AIWn4lRYB9cxqhNm7ljLne58Ua8ZjH9ctadY56yA3VCqxo/s320/photo%252858%2529.JPG" width="240" /></span></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

Anytime she sees the bag with the pom pom balls in it, she grabs it and starts playing. All you need is some pom pom balls (cotton balls would work too) and ice cube trays. All they do is put the pom poms into the ice cube trays. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPsf_fdYYUYJdsXoaCg2EMMAA4vs6c04ACQHja78as1D-CymTZVapt3DOhABVLNdxcZP7zlWhxEMNVxBeRAavajWaBB-DoQOMHaeSCxf98a_oe7XFLiUK-fLUD6L25Sf1N88frJ0w3hos/s320/photo%252854%2529.JPG" width="240" /></div><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> There are a ton of ways to extend this activity to make it more "educational". Have them count the pom poms when they put them in, create color patterns, or sort by color. A variation for older kids is to play with a partner and roll a dice and have them place in that many poms and then figure out how many more they need to fill it up, the first to fill the tray wins. </span><br />

Baking can be difficult with a two year old who wants to taste every ingredient going into something, especially when raw eggs play a factor! After brainstorming and gathering ideas off of pinterest, we decided to do a mish mash of ideas and make rice krispy snow balls! <br />
<br />
Little C helped me measure out 6 cups of rice krispies and add them to a bowl. Then we measured out 4 cups of marshmallows (give or take a few handfuls that went straight to her mouth) and 3 tablespoons of butter into a pan and warmed it on the stove. While I stirred the hot mixture, she sat on the opposite cabinet and gorged herself on extra marshmallows. As soon as the marshmallow/butter mixture was melted, we poured it onto the cereal and then C stirred it up with a little help from mom. <br />
<br />
After the mixture had cooled for a few minutes, I separated it into 12 dollups and then began to roll them into round balls with buttered hands. As soon as a ball was complete, I handed it to C who dropped it into a bowl full of sprinkles and rolled it all around. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Osh5A2S5FuQIQd72z7C8C2jlP-rwNDAU8s2jKDo-_onDZazXKS3-cdBdnBL6qi7svfninzNiQbxAfyEwD4nLohmVrQXxIiRMcfCPhyIzWWK0rvHf4mMijFzcZlZoRwlNb52oKLlHnSE/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8Osh5A2S5FuQIQd72z7C8C2jlP-rwNDAU8s2jKDo-_onDZazXKS3-cdBdnBL6qi7svfninzNiQbxAfyEwD4nLohmVrQXxIiRMcfCPhyIzWWK0rvHf4mMijFzcZlZoRwlNb52oKLlHnSE/s320/photo.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
The end result of our hard work was a super easy, safe to eat, and actually pretty cute little snack! C was incredibly proud of her hard work and insisted that dad eat a snowball as soon as he walked in the door. She checked his face with every bite and smiled with each yum.<br />
<br />
Hope your holiday season is filled with delicious treats and wonderful memories!Butterscotch Castlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00757811310784370701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6927243332010545953.post-77369006290805356012011-12-13T06:48:00.000-08:002011-12-13T06:48:00.682-08:00Popsicle Stick Ornaments<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These are the easiest ornaments to make, they were always a go-to gift in my classroom! She loves to shake in spices to anything we are making and cinnamon seems to be her favorite. I think it is because it is the biggest spice container. I found <a href="http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/green-ideas/make-festive-scented-playdoh-this-season-minieco-133573">this</a> awesome play doh recipe and just used the basic one and added cinnamon. The smells, the lights, the songs...I relish sitting back and drinking it all in like a cup of hot cocoa. As part of our Christmas celebration, we do an advent countdown with one special something for each day. One of our activities this week was a simple art project that I thought was too cute not to share! <br />
<br />
For this project, gather up some paint (in festive colors if you like), a couple of brushes, some hands and feet, and a wet rag! For the wreath, I painted our two year old's tiny little hand and made a circle of hand prints. Then she dipped her finger in red paint for the holly berry decor (I added the bow to make it a little less lopsided). For the tree, we used this idea on pinterest (http://craftrookie.blogspot.com/2011/08/christmas-in-august.html). I painted our eight month old's chubby feet and then pressed them on the paper; then dipped his finger in red paint for the ornaments. Viola! Festive holiday keepsake cuteness!<br />
<br />

Enjoy your holiday season!<br />
p.s. These frames are super cuteness from target that are made especially to display your child's art. They are hinged and open up easily to change out the art and have a pocket insert on the inside to hold past projects--greatness!Butterscotch Castlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00757811310784370701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6927243332010545953.post-51308296341496343482011-12-06T08:15:00.000-08:002011-12-06T08:15:00.296-08:00Tissue Paper Wreath<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have come to the conclusion that any activity involving glue and squares is a winner at our house! Me neither! Well, sticking with tradition, we sat down to write Jolly Ole' Saint Nick a letter! We had a little brainstorming party to come up with some ideas, and then began the letter to Santa. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Straight from my oldest girls mouth....</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div align="right" class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: right;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I hope you are having a great day at the North Pole! I want you to know that I have been really nice this year, but I have also made some mistakes. God forgives me for my mistakes though! I have lots of questions for you, Are the elves making lots of toys in the workshop? Do you like Buddy as much as we do? Also, do the reindeer wear really loud jingle bells, so I can hear them when you come to my house? What is your favorite color? I like pink and purple! </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>I hope you will bring me some toys. What I really want is….</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;">A ring that is pink with green polka dots, a tea set, some new books, like Pinkilicious, and a Belle princess dress with Belle shoes. I think my sister would like a Snow White baby doll and a Snow White dress. I think she will share with me too! Also she might like some beautiful gold shoes with real diamonds on them! My mommy might like a new dress and my daddy would like a football shirt. And can you bring Lily and Dottie some new bouncy balls to play with? </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: #cc0000;"><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"> </span>You are the best and just to let you know, me, Emmee Kate and my mommy will bake you your favorite cookies and leave you your favorite milk the night you come to visit!</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: red;"> I love you, </span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: 'Speedball No 3 NF'; font-size: 16pt;"><span style="color: red;">Haddee</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: center;">Obviously, your letter will be completely different from ours, but it really is so fun to do! </div><div style="text-align: center;">The best part is Santa will write your child back {wink..wink} </div><div style="text-align: center;">All you have to do is create a letter from Santa to your child. Make it very personal, so they will be super excited! Then prepare an envelope that is already addressed & stamped. Put that envelope in a bigger one and ship it to:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Santa Claus </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">325 S. </div>I wanted to make a cute Turkey centerpiece for Thanksgiving, so we decided to make a Thankful turkey! I traced the kids hands on construction paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-VkH6NhhkQAc9W4keoh9Bl6uL9ymbVxEv0bhFRqMuNmFeToLIJAAiuORYDfFjsTnUatdBHh85_lI-T8wQ7m_V1Pr9slDr32XjtEJbYNg8BcRU2ypwlxYw2lmswphhcl_hWuc5OOcSMeo/s1600/fall+craft+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-VkH6NhhkQAc9W4keoh9Bl6uL9ymbVxEv0bhFRqMuNmFeToLIJAAiuORYDfFjsTnUatdBHh85_lI-T8wQ7m_V1Pr9slDr32XjtEJbYNg8BcRU2ypwlxYw2lmswphhcl_hWuc5OOcSMeo/s320/fall+craft+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I asked the kids what they were thankful for and wrote it in the middle of the hand. Then we gave our turkey a little face (using the construction paper scraps) and drew on some eyes and glued the "feathers" on him! I think it will be a hit on Thanksgiving!<br />

I decided to let the girls tell me what they were most {thankful} for this year. I had actually forgotten about it until this year when I stumbled across some Thanksgiving activities on pinterest. It made me smile to bring out the supplies for my little one this year, and I look forward to doing it with her for many years to come!<br />
<br />
(the photos are lacking on this post because we were trying to get the whole thing done while little brother napped...our set up was hurried, but the end result was fun!)<br />
<br />
The supplies for this activity can really be just about anything you have on hand. For our edible turkey, we used an apple, marshmallow confetti, toothpicks, reese's cups and a powdered sugar glaze, but you could get creative and use just about anything you can find in your pantry!<br />
<br />
Once you have your supplies ready, go to work...or start eating the supplies! :D<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioAbp5Jo-_y3oZqOWS_0wzFQZp3lxB_61J5oo-njzh1Gn3LNcwKW2BRbZwbXT4ZVzUlauxyn-z3dcXuZaeBt_wPK6B-u5lXIFiBGyCYetQF76-40L4BDpkruQKZyl4EVviZXGnmu2rmRQ/s1600/DSC04872.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioAbp5Jo-_y3oZqOWS_0wzFQZp3lxB_61J5oo-njzh1Gn3LNcwKW2BRbZwbXT4ZVzUlauxyn-z3dcXuZaeBt_wPK6B-u5lXIFiBGyCYetQF76-40L4BDpkruQKZyl4EVviZXGnmu2rmRQ/s320/DSC04872.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Because lil' C is only two, I did most of the arranging, but she chose the colors for each thing and counted as we put them on. It is a fun way to practice colors and compare more and less! To make the feathers, simply stick toothpicks in an apple (or your fruit of choice--oranges would smell delicious), and then thread on items to build feathers. We used marshmallow confetti, but cheerios, popcorn, or dried fruit would all work well too. After we had built feathers to our hearts' content, we made a face using a reese's cup secured by toothpicks to the apple. Then we dipped marshmallows in a powdered sugar glaze (powdered sugar and water mixed until thick and sticky) and arranged them on the face. And yes my child is still in her pajamas at three p.m.; she wore them all day long. It was one of those days! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT53rorkt4M2bG4k0xCn43adorw4ibboVx-A6XvxHa7GAoJpyl4A1eLQED7yfBqr5GgQPTIUIFTH28VtMkSxAXgKFkb1W10o_q30mqL6Zm_wDorzNK58nNrtrNtNPBAhEyKwu6GJlSxEY/s1600/DSC04869.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhT53rorkt4M2bG4k0xCn43adorw4ibboVx-A6XvxHa7GAoJpyl4A1eLQED7yfBqr5GgQPTIUIFTH28VtMkSxAXgKFkb1W10o_q30mqL6Zm_wDorzNK58nNrtrNtNPBAhEyKwu6GJlSxEY/s320/DSC04869.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Our finished product! Notice the random yellow marshmallow on the turkey's face. Chloe informed me that it was his hat and insisted it go there--silly girl! These would make adorable place card holders or decorations if they lasted around your house for more than a day (good luck with that!)!<br />

<br />
Supplies: (I got all of ours at hobby lobby!)<br />
<ul><li>blank canvas</li>
<li>acrylic paints</li>
<li>paint brushes</li>
<li>masking tape </li>
</ul>We made an inital out of masking tape. Then got on our painting clothes and they were ready to go!<br />
<br />

</div><div style="text-align: center;"> I have been wanting to add a little color to my porch lately. The pumpkins just weren't cutting it anymore. I ran by Lowe's today and they have pansies on sale for .50 cents! Now, they're little sad pansies, but with a little love they'll be great! I hope! :) And what better way to jazz up a pot then let a sweet girl paint on it! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

It is one of my top two favorite holidays (second only to Christmas), and I am determined to make it one of my daughter's as well! :D As part of our countdown to Thanksgiving, we are doing a few easy yet adorable little activities. Today our special event involved turkey toes and thankfulness for the good friends that God has given us! <br />
<br />
I originally got the idea of "Turkey Toes" off of pinterest (sooo cute: http://pinterest.com/search/?q=turkey+toes), but after Halloween, I could not find ANY candy corn at our local supermarkets! Boo! Inspired by the fall colors (and deliciousness) of Reese's Pieces, we made an off the cuff decision and changed our "Turkey Toes" to "Turkey Treats."<br />
<br />
For this gift, you need the following:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc6Jjt85UwIzzYtg6NEH3yfliPsx6bCq-87EeCrr3z69JeCL3IMxA0E8UUS3IDzc0Jj-DSLu8TvGxj1Ah34gSDY4FNacPCxsCV-aGS5N-7QrgIsGtN32A2ZX5VsTWiQPlF66NDk59Ro3s/s1600/DSC04833.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc6Jjt85UwIzzYtg6NEH3yfliPsx6bCq-87EeCrr3z69JeCL3IMxA0E8UUS3IDzc0Jj-DSLu8TvGxj1Ah34gSDY4FNacPCxsCV-aGS5N-7QrgIsGtN32A2ZX5VsTWiQPlF66NDk59Ro3s/s320/DSC04833.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Reese's Pieces (or candy corn), a scooping device, containers of some sort, ties of some sort, a whole punch, and decorative tags or paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEI3As3TiFJDvc4bKLKxQrJpDoE-QcRVBCZ3JB5hSx3wHifktW9yozvBuNt4BUVgsWXavWvoWl80enut-qPhNqAYSTLZ3Il2ZbXDNTGZgUD2VnuLxFHTT05kWj2eJ84l-m78EHoyZsAeY/s1600/DSC04820.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEI3As3TiFJDvc4bKLKxQrJpDoE-QcRVBCZ3JB5hSx3wHifktW9yozvBuNt4BUVgsWXavWvoWl80enut-qPhNqAYSTLZ3Il2ZbXDNTGZgUD2VnuLxFHTT05kWj2eJ84l-m78EHoyZsAeY/s320/DSC04820.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
First, have your adorable, and half-naked, child decorate some paper for the tags (because you don't have any cute paper on hand).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiycuA6_FeGCom1sRXuizVt7BV4pZfRLg40mAYpBfplzS0OOdupZlRosLUoLBUVArPIOhQ1I5nFZSZwzAtwnLMs5GG0M2pZHdVbXahB9QsLfxPOGCla2SogflaPJb_aFzOrEG2vDu3pY_s/s1600/DSC04837.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiycuA6_FeGCom1sRXuizVt7BV4pZfRLg40mAYpBfplzS0OOdupZlRosLUoLBUVArPIOhQ1I5nFZSZwzAtwnLMs5GG0M2pZHdVbXahB9QsLfxPOGCla2SogflaPJb_aFzOrEG2vDu3pY_s/s320/DSC04837.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Then, give them a scoop and let them go to town filling up bags with yummy treats! We used a measuring cup in an effort for equality among the bags, but let's be honest, the girl scooped them with her hands just as much as the cup.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVp9zB25-YsWbMrKpl1U2J-vJ1UzC-gWSHEsZPpSvoEse9Grj1ZxbE1gP1XSVGiwnA3z4qWLuVii6ckz58UOxTMccv1UBEa6J5TONWul-VBYL1biiUWEPrVSf-KdrcLrEqvKUJ8waElc/s1600/DSC04840.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVp9zB25-YsWbMrKpl1U2J-vJ1UzC-gWSHEsZPpSvoEse9Grj1ZxbE1gP1XSVGiwnA3z4qWLuVii6ckz58UOxTMccv1UBEa6J5TONWul-VBYL1biiUWEPrVSf-KdrcLrEqvKUJ8waElc/s320/DSC04840.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Concentrating on the job at hand... (this is a good time to discuss more, less or the same by comparing amounts of candy in the bags).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA61VW2ndwtxzbux4rkD8LSHb5zwrywT3SedT54qGxskg3ByTTzJBsEj-EvoO48SFOQvDkeFVCLvTLBVW512u6cBU3b7LVAB70vn03HgThyXwGW5jgw65nA34QwHSGX0Zo7xNRt0P0kIY/s1600/DSC04844.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA61VW2ndwtxzbux4rkD8LSHb5zwrywT3SedT54qGxskg3ByTTzJBsEj-EvoO48SFOQvDkeFVCLvTLBVW512u6cBU3b7LVAB70vn03HgThyXwGW5jgw65nA34QwHSGX0Zo7xNRt0P0kIY/s320/DSC04844.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
When we were finished scooping, we tied off the bags with twine, and made little handprint turkeys with the following messages: on the front--"Turkey Treats" and on the back--"Dear _____, I am thankful for you! Love, C"<br />
<br />
I think they turned out super cute, and my little one is excited to give them out to friends! What kind of activities are you doing to promote thankfulness?Butterscotch Castlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00757811310784370701noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6927243332010545953.post-1602496407920892122011-11-14T08:00:00.000-08:002011-11-14T08:00:09.924-08:00Painting With Leaves<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We had so much fun with the whole process of leaf painting!
