Fluffy Feathered Turkeys

We made a "beautiful" paper bag turkey with foamy textured feathers.  This was a multi-day project for us because we had to wait for the feathers to dry.  

To begin you will need: shaving cream, acrylic paint in a variety of colors, a straw or stick for stirring, paper cut into the shape you want, brown paper bag, scrap paper, googly eyes and a very eager artist!

 

Start by putting a big glob of shaving cream in a pan. 

 

Then let your little artist begin squeezing in paint drops as they see fit. 

 

Next you need to swirl the paint into the shaving cream mixing the colors together.  

 

Push your paper down into the shaving cream.  

 

Set aside to dry.  (They dry with a puffy texture)

 

Next you will create the turkey's body.  I decided since our feathers were gigantic, we would do a stuffed paper bag turkey body.  Olive got to coloring the turkey's body, and of course, it has a rainbow body.  

 

 This was the best part for Olive, scrunching the paper!  After you have it good and smashed, put it in the bag and staple the opening together. 

 Put glue on the back of the bag and smoosh the feathers onto the bag.  You can take a juice break during this step if you want to! 

 

We sat an empty coffee container on the turkey to hold the feathers in place while they dried. 

 

  And wah-la!  Our beautiful turkey! Perfect for the Thanksgiving buffet!

Turkey Treats!

I love Thanksgiving.  It is one of my top two favorite holidays (second only to Christmas), and I am determined to make it one of my daughter's as well! :D As part of our countdown to Thanksgiving, we are doing a few easy yet adorable little activities.  Today our special event involved turkey toes and thankfulness for the good friends that God has given us! 

I originally got the idea of "Turkey Toes" off of pinterest (sooo cute:  http://pinterest.com/search/?q=turkey+toes), but after Halloween, I could not find ANY candy corn at our local supermarkets!  Boo!  Inspired by the fall colors (and deliciousness) of Reese's Pieces, we made an off the cuff decision and changed our "Turkey Toes" to "Turkey Treats."

For this gift, you need the following:

Reese's Pieces (or candy corn), a scooping device, containers of some sort, ties of some sort, a whole punch, and decorative tags or paper.

First, have your adorable, and half-naked, child decorate some paper for the tags (because you don't have any cute paper on hand).

Then, give them a scoop and let them go to town filling up bags with yummy treats!  We used a measuring cup in an effort for equality among the bags, but let's be honest, the girl scooped them with her hands just as much as the cup.

Concentrating on the job at hand... (this is a good time to discuss more, less or the same by comparing amounts of candy in the bags).

When we were finished scooping, we tied off the bags with twine, and made little handprint turkeys with the following messages:  on the front--"Turkey Treats" and on the back--"Dear _____, I am thankful for you! Love, C"

I think they turned out super cute, and my little one is excited to give them out to friends!  What kind of activities are you doing to promote thankfulness?
